The Office of Membership Management

June 25 2016
Welcome to the Department of Membership Management :)

I have always believed that an organization that provides a community for people of all walks of life should connect people with resources that will enhance their lives –assisting others is a tenant of Star Trek and it’s my personal ongoing mission as well.

We are faced with day to day problems at home (we all have some level of damage control to deal with in our personal lives), this is undeniable and so we are in a position to provide members with information to help them solve those problems.  I hope to provide members with information to necessities, helpful government services, references, and points of information that may help them succeed.  I want members to have a starting point if you will, we can’t solve everyone’s problems but, we can bring a sense of calm to the storm of information out there.

Connecting our members with information to the necessities of life or even general information should not require a reason, Star Trek taught me to help others because it was the right thing to do and with that, I hope to do what I can to provide our members with public information that may allow them to succeed in life.

Member Resources
I will be providing links to web sources that may help members seek the information that they may need to succeed.  Whether it’s legal, health services, or LGBT related resources, several public links will be posted to provide a starting point for our members during their research and their journey to access the help that they may need.

LGBT and Transgender Education
My hope is to showcase resources and materials from many speakers throughout the country.  I personally attend local events, workshops and seminars on LGBT and Transgender subjects –I hope to share the valuable knowledge that’s out there with the fleet.

LGBT and Transgender Community Resources and Education

Personal Growth Tools and Resources
Featuring the MindTools website, I hope to show case topics that will benefit our member’s growth, whether it be for their personal, educational or professional goals.   One of my many favorite topics for anyone is Emotional Intelligence.

Core Membership Services
Our core membership duties and responsibilities relate to Star Trek Online and the administrative aspects of the Stonewall Fleet website, these duties include:
  • Processing membership applications
  • Promoting new members
  • Maintaining fleet rosters up-to-date
  • Removing inactive characters

Additional, shared responsibilities include:
  • Welcoming new members
  • Assisting membership with general questions
  • Inviting and processing new characters into the fleets
  • Monitoring fleet areas for breaches of the Code of Conduct
  • Assisting fleet leaders when possible

Member Relations
We look forward to effectuating One-on-One follow-ups with our members.  I want to ensure that all our members know that they are part of the community and that we are here to help them out, especially our new members!  We may drop by to join you in chat or a PVE event (some of us may not be all that great lol) but hey, it’s the thought that counts!

sgnTalks
In my ongoing mission to connect to others and share information, I look forward to launching a project titled sgnTalks. In the spirit of TED Talks, sgnTalks are casual seminars for a group of any size where knowledgeable people within our Gaming Network share their knowledge and engage in structured academic discussions about various issues related to a featured subject. Through these Talks, members get the opportunity to engage in academic discussions, ask questions, and discover something new.

These Talks were inspired by an enriching and engaging conversation that I was involved in within our very own Ten Forward on Teamspeak.  It was a hard conversation for some but in the end, despite any disagreements, everyone appreciated the academic-style learning experience and what they got out of it.  There are subjects out there that may rub people the wrong way, but through exploration in a safe and causal environment –a sprinkle of information goes a long way to at least provide some measure of clarity and that is beyond value.  Look for sgnTalks on the calendar in the near future!

Please let us know if you have any questions or concerns, we will be more than happy to assist you!  Please contact us at the information provided below.

Warm regards,

My favorite Mindtools tip for a successful life is:  Emotional Intelligence

"What is Emotional Intelligence (EI)?

We all have different personalities, different wants and needs, and different ways of showing our emotions. Navigating through this all takes tact and cleverness – especially if we hope to succeed in life. This is where EI becomes important.

EI is the ability to recognize your emotions, understand what they're telling you, and realize how your emotions affect people around you. It also involves your perception of others: when you understand how they feel, this allows you to manage relationships more effectively." -Mindtools

Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence
Daniel Goleman, an American psychologist, developed a framework of five elements that define emotional intelligence:

1. Self-Awareness – People with high EI are usually very self-aware. They understand their emotions, and because of this, they don't let their feelings rule them. They're confident – because they trust their intuition and don't let their emotions get out of control.

They're also willing to take an honest look at themselves. They know their strengths and weaknesses, and they work on these areas so they can perform better. Many people believe that this self-awareness is the most important part of EI.

2. Self-Regulation – This is the ability to control emotions and impulses. People who self-regulate typically don't allow themselves to become too angry or jealous, and they don't make impulsive, careless decisions. They think before they act. Characteristics of self-regulation are thoughtfulness, comfort with change, integrity, and the ability to say no.

3. Motivation – People with a high degree of EI are usually motivated. They're willing to defer immediate results for long-term success. They're highly productive, love a challenge, and are very effective in whatever they do.

4. Empathy – This is perhaps the second-most important element of EI. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand the wants, needs, and viewpoints of those around you. People with empathy are good at recognizing the feelings of others, even when those feelings may not be obvious. As a result, empathetic people are usually excellent at managing relationships, listening, and relating to others. They avoid stereotyping and judging too quickly, and they live their lives in a very open, honest way.

5. Social Skills – It's usually easy to talk to and like people with good social skills, another sign of high EI. Those with strong social skills are typically team players. Rather than focus on their own success first, they help others develop and shine. They can manage disputes, are excellent communicators, and are masters at building and maintaining relationships.

As you've probably determined, EI can be a key to success in your life – especially in your career. The ability to manage people and relationships is very important in all leaders, so developing and using your EI can be a good way to show others the leader inside of you.

This month's Mindtools topic for a successful life is:  How Good Are Your Management Skills?

"In business, we often seem to focus less on good management, and more on the glamorous and exciting work of leadership.

However, managers are responsible for making sure that things are done properly. And while leaders may bring us vision, inspiration and challenge, these things count for nothing without the efficient implementation brought about by good management.

To be a great manager, you must have an extensive set of skills – from planning and delegation to communication and motivation. Because the skill set is so wide, it's tempting to build skills in the areas of management that you're already comfortable with. But, for your long-term success, it's wise to analyze your skills in all areas of management – and then to challenge yourself to improve in all of these areas.

This quiz helps you to quickly identify your areas of strength and weakness, so that you can capitalize on the former and manage the latter. We then direct you to resources that you can use to develop your skills further." -Mindtools

Roster Checks for Character Inactivity
Please be aware that characters (toons) are removed from our in-game rosters within Star Trek Online if they remain inactive 90 days or longer from the date that the in-game rosters are checked.

[]  Inactivity is based on the last date that a player logged into/used his or her character.  Cryptic provides a player's last login date within its in-game rosters.

[]  Roster checks are conducted on a semi-monthly basis or as needed before the end of each month.

[]  This policy was effectuated years ago because Cryptic has a 500 character capacity on each fleet.  In order to stay below capacity, our rosters must be reviewed for inactive characters so that we have enough space for all of our current or any new active characters.

If your character was removed due to inactivity, no problem! It is very easy to re-invite your character into one of our in-game fleets, simply make a request within the in-game chat box to be re-invited into which ever fleet your character belonged to and one of our leaders shall assist you.

Should you have any questions or concerns, let me know : )

Ranks and how promotions work
Stonewall Fleet has six different ranks: Recruit, Cadet, Member, Fleet Captain, Admiral, Fleet Admiral. Although you will gain different ranks within Star Trek Online ranging from Lieutenant all the way to Vice Admiral, within Stonewall Fleet you will progress through the ranks below. Within Star Trek Online, you can see your fleet rank by selecting "Fleet" from the down arrow next to your minimap.

Recruit
A recruit is someone who has been invited into a Stonewall related fleet but is not yet fully registered on the website.  Also, the person may already be registered on the website but is missing a key component of his or her registration, such as a Cryptic @ handle, or similar piece of important information.  Either way, a person cannot be fully identified under the aforementioned circumstances, therefore it is important that this information be completed as soon as possible.  Anyone that joins any in-game Stonewall related fleet must create an account/profile within the website and complete their full registration information within 7 days from the date that they were invited to an in-game fleet otherwise if they do NOT register on the website, recruits will be removed from the in-game fleet.  A fleet captain or admiral can assist recruits with this process.  Please note that Recruits have extremely limited access to any fleet banks within the game.

Cadet
A cadet is someone who has been invited into Stonewall Fleet and has a complete their registration on the website.  To progress to "member" status, a cadet must create an introduction post within the "Start Here!!" forum section to introduce themselves to the community.  If a cadet does not do this, he/she will remain a cadet indefinitely.  Cadets are promoted to the status of "member" after 14 days from the date that the cadet created an introduction post.  Cadets have limited access to the fleet banks within the game.

Member
A member is someone who has successfully posted an introductory thread in the Start Here section and waited the required 14 days. If you are not a member and do not understand why, please reach out to a fleet captain or admiral. Most users are at this rank. Members have much less restricted access to the fleet bank in game.

Fleet Captain
A fleet captain is someone who has been a member in Stonewall Fleet for enough time to be able to help users and the community with things that are not well known. They have volunteered some of their time to help the fleet in whatever way they can. They can assist with answering questions, inviting people into any of the STO guilds, moderating parts of our community, and with fleet sponsored events.  They serve as the first line of escalation or help for the community.  Please feel free to reach out to a fleet captain when needed and ask for help.  Fleet captains handle most in-game member grievances or concerns.

Admiral
An Admiral is a Officer of Stonewall. In addition to performing all the duties of a fleet captain, Admirals handle more complicated issues including interpreting fleet bylaws, approving fleet events, representing the Stonewall brand, and managing member grievances or concerns.  Admirals may handle grievances or concerns escalated from any member or fleet captain.

Fleet Admiral
The fleet admiral is the leader of Stonewall Fleet or Community Manager.  Although responsible for the general oversight of the fleet and SGN, the fleet admiral also handles the most difficult or complex concerns of member issues.  The fleet admiral may handle grievances/concerns escalated from members, fleet captains, or admirals and will issue a final decision based on the evidence provided.

Should you have any questions, let me know.

This month's Mindtools topic for a successful life is:  Constructive Controversy

"Improving Solutions by Arguing For and Against Your Options.

In general, we like to consult others when there's a problem to solve or a decision to make. We do this because we know that, as individuals, we have limited perspectives; and what may at first appear to be the best solution from one vantage point may no longer seem so after we've seen a fuller picture." -Mindtools

What is Constructive Controversy?
This problem-solving approach was introduced by David Johnson and Roger Johnson in 1979. It has been researched and validated, and it's recognized as a leading model for developing robust and creative solutions to problems. The technique draws on five key assumptions:

1. We adopt an initial perspective towards a problem based on our personal experiences and perceptions.

2. The process of persuading others to agree with us strengthens our belief that we are right.

3. When confronted with competing viewpoints, we begin to doubt our rationale.

4. This doubt causes us to seek more information and build a better perspective, because we want to be confident with our choice.

5. This search for a fuller perspective leads to better overall decision making.
