GPU suggestions?

My PC froze up again last night on STO, think my GPU got too hot...
then I realised, the fan hasn't been making it's usual noisy noises...tried setting the fan speed to max and nothing...so I'm guessing it's gone and done a Harry Kim on me....need to get it Kobali'd so, is the below any good? I'm currently on a 550 so I'm guessing the 730 is a better (or more new number)

it could handle just doing the omega particles but once i got to the shuttle pvp last night, BOOM! it froze my PC

Nvidia if your CPU is Intel.
Radeon if your CPU is Athlon.

I bought a R9 270 off ebay for just over $100 about two weeks ago. upgraded from a radeon 5570. a lot better detail but still sputtered along a little. i attributed that to my CPU...so i upgraded my athlon II 2.9GHz to a phenom II 3.2GHz and overclocked it to 3.6GHz. i might try to get it to 4GHz but don't want to risk damaging it...it works just fine at 3.6. much better performance and figured for the $200 it cost me to do both upgrades i'd get another year or two out of my current rig. since it's maxed out now, i'd probably have to make the decision to get an entirely new AMD based machine or switch over to Intel.
