Other Mac Users/Any Users Having Issues?

November 11 2014
Are any other Mac users having massive issues using the new Delta STO? Are loads of people not able to do anything since the updates? Like I can't even get through the Nelix mission. I am trying to not get pissed off. I spent good money to get a great ship and gear and now I don't have real access to it.

To answer your questions: No my Mac is not old, yes it is updated and the current OSX. I didn't buy my Mac with gaming in mind but it is a top of the line computer and everything ran fine with super graphics settings before. And now I can't even do my dailies. :-/ grrrrrr lol

Thank you for letting me vent - is anyone else not able to play!?!?

What are the issues exactly it may be other people have had them. Also have yoi checked the DTO forums to see if other people have reported the same problems as you and if there is a fix?

My laptop (MBP) doesn't do too bad with the game in OSX, but I have not played too much DR on it. I have never gotten the game to play well on my Mac desktop in Mac OSX (2010 MacPro), so I use bootcamp for it. Yes there is a reboot involved, but it's a lot less frustrating. I have a small Win partition on the main drive and use a second drive for Win gaming which has worked well for gaming in general.

That said, I have noticed this last patch is slightly more unstable than normal overall.

Did notice one thing on my laptop- the game client is reporting a pixel shader error. Looks like other people on the forums have the same issue.

That´s not only Mac specific, I have the same error message with my Windows laptop.

I think it has something to do with the DirectX-Version you´ve choosen in the graphics settings (I have DirectX9 instead of DirectX11). Not confirmed though, I wanted to test if the error disappears after switching back to 11, but I always forget it...

Hmmm.... interesting. Macs don't use DirectX, which graphic features need DX11 on the PC side? I wonder if turning off specific graphic settings may address this issue (at least Mac side).

To answer those questions: Yes I have the pixel shading error as well... But what happens is that I get about five minutes of game play (as I said, on the lowest settings possible, then the whole game just freezes. I can't get out of it I can't do anything. I have to force restart my Mac.

Also just in case it matters I have a:
Macbook Pro Retina 15 inch, bought in February.
OSX Yosemite 10.10.1
Graphics (I know nothing about graphics cards, I am just reading it from the info screen) Intel Iris Pro 1536 MB

I have googled the issue but only briefly, I am so busy that I have just been trying to get on and then give up after it freezes. I plan on googling and reading actual threads tomorrow after work. I know about bootcamp but I would love to not have to deal with that as well. We shall see going forward.

I will say that I am "glad" that the PC people have the shading error - it means it isn't just me/my Mac being dumb :-)

Also: thanks for the replies everyone!! :-)

Have you been getting WiFi disconnects? Yosemite has been having that issue, though I suspect that you would see other signs before a lockup.

DirectX is a part of Windows, you could say that it works like a "Liaison Officer" between games, the hardware and the operating system.

I´m not sure if turning off some graphics settings will let disappear the error message.

P.S.: After the launch of a new season there are usually always the same two problems:

1. Mac Client doesn´t work.
2. Game Pads don´t work.

They get it usually fixed within a few weeks, but it´s sad that they even launch a new season before that stuff works properly.

I´m not sure if for Macs still the option exists, which I had for my Power Mac 7200/90 about 20 years ago: I could "simulate" a Windows operating system (Windows Emulator or something like that) and was able to install Windows software.

But you shouldn´t even have to think about that possibility. I mean, STO offers a Mac client and they should get it to work, dammit!

I've used Parallels for gaming with mixed results. SWTOR runs fins in Parallels on my MBP, the STO PC client did not. Though that could very well be because I didn't fiddle with enough, since there is a Mac client.

Experimented a bit more. I was able to run the game through missions etc on my MBP. I did set everything down to the minimal settings, and also dropped the resolution. I haven't started to up the settings yet, but things were definitely very playable and no frame rate issues.

One thing I noticed is that the Mac client is fairly processor intensive for a game and heats the MPB up more than many games (even SWTOR running in Parallels), which may because of the virtualization with Cider.

The Parallels test was a no go. The PC client does not like Parallels and will not get past the first loading screen.

Good news!

I was able to get on today and play!!!!!! HAZAAH!!! At long last I was able to get on and play without it crashing. I even tested it by doing things which used to mess it up like transitioning maps a lot and things like the tailor. They must have released some stability stuff or something because the game didn't go down once.

I was even able to drag the display settings back up to reasonable levels.

Thanks everyone for the comments on the thread!

I am now in the process of enjoying my T5-U cruiser :-) Cheers fleeties. :woohoo:
