Possible New Star Trek TV Series

August 24 2011
Since the cancellation of Enterprise, there have been several half-baked efforts to bring Star Trek back to TV. However, one producer has what seems to be the most fleshed-out idea yet, and is preparing to pitch it to CBS.

David Foster Preparing to Pitch New 'Star Trek' Series

Thoughts? I like the idea that it will continue into the future of the current timeline. Don't get me wrong, I love JJ Abrams' film and interpretation of the TOS era, but a lot of the series' more interesting characters were introduced afterwards.

Too bad it will also likely invalidate STO's story. :P

Personally I would love to see them bring back DS9 and continue where it left off and include maybe the return of the "Founders" and Dominion Wars II :)

Eh, I'd much rather have a new cast and set far enough in the future that things have a fresh, new feeling to them. I'm thing the TNG era has been mined dry.

I like the Titan books, but I would also prefer to see it set far enough in the future to make it new and fresh. I wish them luck I'd love to see another series on TV since it seems like all the good scifi currently on tv is getting canceled.

I'd love any sort of new Star Trek but there's one thing that bothers me...

The series is highly energized with a much younger cast

We already have the Abrams Star Trek (which I loved) with the young cast. Why do we need to go younger with a new series? I actually quite like seeing fully grown adults commanding star ships it's much more realistic and they tend to carry more realistic problems.

But to be honest, I'd take anything :)

EDIT: OH MY GOD! Totally forgot this was my 500th post! Go me! :)

God... Highly energised with a much younger cast... Dawson's Moon? Risa Hills 90210? No spank you.

I'd love a new series!

The teaser for the series:
If evil wore the face of a hero, would you recognize it? If freedom came in the likeness of your oppressors, would you accept it? If you were your own enemy, who would be victorious?”

Maybe this means it'll flip around the way we look at good vs evil in the Alpha Quadrant and have a new outlook on the Federation. I'm sure it's changed a lot after years at war with multiple parties.

From the article...
An AfterElton.com story published earlier this year suggested that Foster’s project would involve two openly gay characters — a male lead character and a secondary female character — but Foster did not go into details about the characters in the more recent interview.

Hellz Yeah! Maybe gays will finally be included in Star Trek Cannon!

The current film series is still going strong, with Abrams preparing to start production on his second Star Trek film early next year.

What the hell? They starting the next film, next year? What's taking so long? The first film was a huge hit, you'd think they'd be a bit quicker to start making some more money of the franchise.

I heard Simon Pegg (Scotty) on the radio months ago and he said they were starting filming in October this year. But you know these things are always delayed.

I've read reasons about why it has taken so long and they all seem to go for the idea that they didn't want to rush out a second sequel to make money and it not be very good. They wanted to take time to develop a really solid script.

But you know ... it is taking far too long! :(

I think they're going younger with the series because the new movie was such a hit; they hope to duplicate the success with a new series. I'm sure the Captain will be more mature than the rest of the cast. It worked for TNG; most of those actors were in their 20's when the show premiered.

A minor disappointment with Star Trek was that there weren't enough hot guys- there were handsome guys to be sure- but no one quite "smoking" until Tripp that is ;)

It may be a cliche' but adding sex appeal to a scifi series can really give it a boost in ratings, which unfortunately is all that network execs care about. Voyager did this with the addition of Seven of Nine and Enterprise with T'Pol, and Tripp, and for awhile it worked (I blame the writing for the downfall of Ent). But you can still have young hot actors and really good drama at the same time; look at the new Battlestar Galactica series.

The premise does sound promising and I think the franchise has had enough of us delving into Trek's past. It's very much time to look towards the future like STO does. I, for one am very enthusiastic about this potential series.

What if they set it in the mirror universe, after the influence of the good side, a federation may develop there as well. Identical in almost every way, but with the history of the mirror universe maybe it's open to corruption and dictatorship, even while the population feel like they're finally achieving a utopian society?

I personally would love to have it in the not so distant future from Nemesis so we can still see minor recurring rolls from Captain Data, Ambassador Picard, Admiral Janeway, and the return of the emissary!

My only hope is that if they have gays in the series I just hope they don't have them in "Harry Kim" type rolls where absolutely anything negative that happens always happens to them lol

But I'd be happy with any new Star Trek on screen at this point ^_^

That's actually the one thing I'm worried about with this idea. I'm getting tired of the 'government turns out to be corrupt and it's up to our plucky heroes to expose them for the lying liars they are' trope. I wouldn't mind if they did this for a season, but if that's the arc for the entire series, I'm going to get bored with it really fast.

Plus, I've always liked how the Federation, as a whole, has remained close its ideals. They're a nice spot of optimism in my sci-fi!

Of course, that said, I would love it if they created some sort of futuristic parody of the Tea Party (xenophobic, crazed "purists") that tried to get humanity to leave the Federation, and they're the villains for a part of a season.

I also read that JJ Abrams has another project he wanted to do first before the sequel which is another reason for the delay

The way I see it is that after years of war, the Federation has become far too militaristic and close minded, only worried about survival. Now that the wars have ended and a new era of peace has begun, they have to help push the Federation back to its original ideas of exploration and humanitarian aide.

I've heard ideas from everywhere on this. The ones I like though are:

Animated version, ala SW:Clone Wars, of Titan or new Voyager. Has potential just because the budget wouldn't have to be as big with effects being almost limitless.

A glue series that shows the gap between TOS and TNG. I think this could be fun and it would be easy to intertwine familiar characters.

And props to the G and T show, a vanguard-esque story arc that follows 4 or 5 different offices/ships assigned to said star base. This would give the writers a ton of options but I don't know how much it would pull in more casual fans.

At any rate new Trek is better than no trek, great thread.

This is very exciting news. I really hope this turns out to be set further in the future than TNG/DS9/VOY. I agree that we have seen a lot during this timeline and something further in the future will be refreshing. I just hope there are no kids especially a Wesley like character. I loved TNG but the families business always bored me.
