Completely amazed by this. Especially when you consider that LESS people got involved in NY. Perhaps not more tolerant but less likely to be bothered?

I remember back to my college days when we learned about about a concept, and I'm going to butcher the name of, "Shared Responsibility." The more people that are witness, the less likely someone is to get involved.

If someone is in an intimate setting with only one or two people around, the fewer number have a greater shared responsibility to act, and therefore are more likely to do so.

If you've got a hundred bystanders, everyone has a smaller shared responsibility to act, and therefore any one person is less likely to do so.

This was a great video, Nicholas. Thanks for sharing.

It's nice to see, for once, that the issue is being shown and addressed outside of the usual political rhetoric.

Wow, that's a real eye opener...

Perhaps your average person in the US south is far more tolerant than the media generally give them credit for.

Kudos to those people in Texas!

Great clip, thanks for sharing it!

Wow, that got me teary too!

I don't think it proves anything about States though... as Mark says, 'shared responsibility'. If this situation happened with only one other person/couple in the restaurant, chances are they'd say something (I'd hope).

absolutly awsome. It realy pisses me off when I hear people gay bashing and being shit talkers about homosexuality. I may be the one of the few token straights in this fleet but me personaly if that had happen
ed where i was eating or just being where I could hear it she or he would have got what for. (once dragged a man from a bar by his throat just for saying "fukin fag" End of the day if peoiple dont like what someone is then fine but voice it in a none racist/homaphobic way and sit down with people and talk over your issues. ( i know no homophobs are going to be reading this realy but hey) GAY PRIDE!!!!!! Be proud of who you are not what others say about you. You are special and unique and are loved for the person you are not for who you love and want to be with.

Go Texas, I'd be more concerned for the kids being made to eat in that greasy spoon.

Interesting that the lesbians got more support than the lads.

I'm not surprise the lesbian couple in the clip got more support than the guys did.

In a straight male dominated culture, the idea of two women is easier for people to accept than two men.

But, things are changing ... slowly ... one generation at a time.

i can't believe that in texas that gay can be refused to service.

in witch time live texas in 1700? or 1600? that makes me still cry.

i thought germany are not right on time what gay and lesbians is in law and the respect. but now i am happy to see that germany is much more in the right time. netherlands and danemark are in first place for gay and lesbian in law.

i hope it is possible to understand what i want to say.

after all texas is stone age in my eyes

Ich verstehe Sie vollkommen

I hope that made sense it has been a long time since I did any German!

I was shocked at how some States can refuse gay people service. In the UK recently a pub owner refused two gay men because they kissed in his pub.

Next day loads of gays protested outside his pub.

That was freaking awesome.

I like how it stops the sterotype. It was an interesting experiment.

I remember my mate Kat was not happy when I came out, but we remained friends. Two years later there was these neds taking the piss out of these lassies who were a couple. One of the neds pushed them and Kat ran across the road and knocked the guy out. It was fantastic.

Although she's more interested in me being happy shes not still not happy with my "lifestyle" She doesn't have a problem with it. She knows the difference between right and wrong. I kinda think that's what this experiment proves also. Then again I could have misintrepurted the points as there is a few in this video.

Also interestingly enough 3 years ago in Campus my mate megan said that there was a night a gay couple kissed in Campus. Now I used to work there fortunately I was off this night or I would have kicked up shit, but basicly when they did the anti-gay DJ who I used to butt horns with frequently stopped the music and everyone stared in disgust. Now i've never experienced anything like that in Glasgow, but the staff were shocked and the gay staff were raging. The DJ intentionally highlighted this, he still works there.... Megan even said to him and she's not the type for confrontation.

whats ther diffrence between sexist homaphobic and anti gay? my words nthing thay are all the same just present in difrent ways their discust for gay people. most of it is down to 2 things I thinks. scared of there own subconsios feeling and jealosy. Was a soap box preacher in town a couple of weeks ago who ended up getting surrounded by alot of gay people for the things he was preaching. he upset one couple and i think they caled their friends who all came to support them and rally against him. I actualy felt sorry for the guy as he had casued himself alot of hassle but end of the day you say the words, makie sure they are the rigfht ones. when the police came baecause it was getting out of hand they began making the protest away and pushing people. I walked up and spoke to them and told them straight you gy was being homaphobic and preaching that being gay was evil which i think put a diffrent light on it. everyone was sti9ll asked to move on and as we all left the police were deaply talking to the man who had been nasty. If this is christianity, who needs it?

I remember reading out that in the newspaper here. That kinda behaviour is illegal here in Canada in "publicly accessed" areas.

Although businesses that have "private paid memberships" can discriminate (e.g. It is legal for a Women's Gym to refuse men who want to join...) which I'm okay with.

WARNING: The following is potentially politically charged and comes from a pretty libertarian view. Please note that these are simply my personal opinions on matters and can respect thoughtful disagreement.

I don't really have the time to go through the entire video again, but I recall an overlay mentioning how many states had anti-discrimination policies on the books and it was less than half if I recall correctly.

That doesn't bother me in the least In the U.S. when it comes to business we have the freedom to vote with our wallets. If an establishment does something we don't like, you don't patronize the establishment. My personal opinion is that it's absurd for our elected officials to have to waste their time making laws to prohibit certain groups, or forcibly allow others (e.g. smokers). I firmly believe there are substantially more important issues to deal with (but won't go into that here). It's a nanny state I personally don't want to live in.

A timely national poll was released this week showing that for the first time, the majority of Americans are for Gay Marriage equality, and in my experience this number will only grow. If a business decides to exclude one group of people, you can bet that there will be a backlash against them by potential patrons. I don't think the government needs to step in.

I really liked this video because it presented things as "this is what happened" and didn't try to skew things to show that Texas or any other "red" (Republican) state were backwards homophobes, and "blue" (Democrat) states were enlightened intellectuals. This usual intentional mis-characterization of the participants in a debate does not help matters.

We need to get beyond the name calling and political affiliation demagoguing so we can get to the humanity of the participants. Only then can real debate and progress be made.

Years ago, when I finally came out of the closet and was making a new life for me in the area I live in now, I wrote a small missive for my MySpace profile as a creative way of telling people about who I was, and what my hopes and dreams were.

I firmly believe that real social change does not come from the Capitol, the Oval Office, or from the Pulpit. It comes from you and me respectfully interacting with the people we come into contact with. Parading half-naked down the street and simulating sex at a Pride parade isn't going to change anyone's mind about "gay equality".

But I have seen in my own life, how the "normalcy" of the life I have created with MikeyNY, has made us welcomed in our conservative leaning suburban neighborhood. My boss and several colleagues are very right-leaning, but I have had nothing but friendship, acceptance, and support from them. I interact with Indian vendors on a daily basis, and I have developed friendships with several of them even though their culture still shuns marrying outside of their caste, much less adding racial or sexual-orientation issues into the mix.

Even more shockingly for me: my devoutly-Catholic father has even come around after 3 years and is now willing to attend our marriage ceremony.

Sorry for the soap box moment. I guess I'm just tired of the labels and stereotypes on ALL fronts and am frustrated that some are actively encouraged for political reasons.
