Sato Institute of Xenolinguistics Website

March 31 2011
Some of you know that I've been compiling names that players have been using for different species' characters, and then running them through an algorithm to determine what we players collectively feel like the languages of different species sound like. I've been trying to post the results on message boards, but it's much to unwieldy. So, instead, I've created a website to post the results. It's live: http://s-i-x.webs.com , but not filled out yet. I plan to work on this for the next day or two.

At the moment, Andorian and Orion are ready to post. I've been wanting to get Caitian ready to post, but I've determined that players have taken two such radically different takes on Caitian, that I'm considering breaking it down into two dialects, which I call the "Shiboline" and "M'Ress" dialects, as those two names look like the two directions folks go with Caitian names.

Right now, I'm going to create a logo for the Institute. I'm looking up the Egyptian hieroglyphic for "tongue", I figure that would be a good base for a logo.

I will give 100,000 credits to whoever can take this logo, put it into Photoshop, and make it look crisp, professional, and presentable.

Would you mind if we put this in the Times for next month?

Also, there is a book out there of Orion names -- someone gave me mine: Nispivan

Sure, put it in the Times.

Interestingly, that's not the direction STO players have thought of the Orion language. I would describe their take on Orion as Latin, with Arabic and Sanskrit substrates. You'll see what I mean when I get the rest of the list up.

The offer of 100,000 credits for Photoshopping the logo still stands.

What is that your trying to show here? What's the symbol in the center? Are you looking for an exact copy just with slight better resolution?

The symbol in the centre is the Egyptian hieroglyphic for "tongue".

Mostly looking for anti-aliasing and a bit of depth, maybe even some bevelled edges if you really wanna go full-tilt, but keep the design the same.

Great work, I love the whole concept, absolutely facinating, thank you .

Do you know the name of that font you used for the letters?

Here's what I have so far. I hope you don't mind, but I replace the large stars with something else. I gave it the same background as the United Federation of Planets symbol and extended it to the three outer circles. I thought maybe that was the look you were looking for? I also gave the hieroglyph a sandstone effect, or atleast tried to, with a bevel. Tell me what you think and I can make any changes that you like.

I would suggest using a bit more contrasting color for the center symbol. It's lost in the stars behind it. Maybe make the background for that a indigo blue with the stars being yellows and oranges, that could make the silver symbol pop out at the viewer.

Wow! Far more than I expected

Two notes:
*I envision this institute in the Star Trek Universe as a civilian organisation, not Starfleet. The background to the circles at the moment looks too Starfleet. So, I guess, I like it gussied up the way you did, just maybe tone down the stars some, fewer stars like.

*The area around the logo has to be black so that it fits the background of the banner on the website (http://s-i-x.webs.com for reference). I don't have the option of being able to use a transparent background for the logo, so it has to match the black on the right side of the banner.

Thanks!
Peace

I don't mean to poke my nose in, but I thought I'd just point out that the band of stars (with the three pointed stars) is part of the symbol of the United Federation of Planets, a civilian governing body, not Starfleet. There are some badges, mostly fan created, that use both the Starfleet logo (ie the commbadge) along with the star field, but only to represent both organisations. If I remember correctly, there are other civilian and diplomatic organisations in the Star Trek universe who use the star field, mostly to show they are not aligned with one particular planet or civilisation. I think it's quite fitting that a galactic organisation would use a star field to show the same thing.

I agree the starfield has been used by just about all of the UFP civilian interplanetary organizations. I would personally take the graphic and since the symbol is egyptian in origin, whether you are going to keep with that or not, should be a brackish dull yellow, possibly the outlines of the circles as well, there is too much light/white/silver with the star background. Also as a layman not knowing what it is supposed to be there are 2 things that jump out even though i'm positive that wasn't the meaning.. first you see SIX, which may be what it was meaning, but to laymen they have no clue, wth is six? I would suggest placing inside the large inner circle beneath each smaller circle the names it's for. So under S in a small font following the ridge put SATO, I Institute and X Xenolinguistics. that way it's there so those who don't know. Even the UFP states United Federation of Planets in it's symbol as a reference. And 2nd, sorry.. first time i saw it i just wanted to burst out singing M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E. ;)

Take what you made, Nick, delete some of the stars, and darken the blue. I'll be happy and you'll get your credits. Thanks.

Big site update!

I just reformatted the spreadsheets in which I had the Orion and Andorian lists, and transferred them to the website. You can find them in their final form at http://s-i-x.webs.com

Here ya go. Darker blue and less stars.

Don't worry about paying me. If you like, you can donate the credits to the fleet.

Thanks! I really appreciate it. I only have Paint to work with, so this would not have been possible without your help.

Could you please either give it a background that matches the colour of the upper right of the website ( http://s-i-x.webs.com ), or put a border around the edge? Webs.com isn't going to read a transparent background. Also, I cannot download a pic from the forums to my hard drive to put into the website, so could you please e-mail it to:
