So how does the game play? Are the controls dumbed down for console users like CO? Is it really a MMO? I've heard some people say it's more like a regular multiplayer and not a massively multiplayer; smaller world/pop. I read many bad things about customisation for both powers and costumes, something about only being able to pick two colours or something. True or myth?

There have been some grumblings that character creation is very limited and combat is a lot of button-mashing (for consoles) and mouse-clicking (for PC's). For a casual gamer like me, I like it for what it is - you log on, do a couple of missions and log off. Granted, there will be a point where you will have to group up to defeat some of the bosses waiting for you at the last adventure of the story arc, but I don't think that's going to be a problem currently. The real test will be a month or so from now to see how many players will stick with it.

I think in time DCU will be a great game. For now, it's a good one.

PS - as for LGBT "Leagues" (their term for player-created supergroups as in City of Heroes), a few were in the process of forming but I haven't seen them in-game yet. A forum post said that LGBT teams from other players were setting up on the US Server "Virtue & Vice" (PvE) but again I haven't seen them.

Anyway, any PC player on the US PvE servers "New Frontier" and "Virtue & Vice" can give me a shout if you want to get together for some missions. These are my alts so far:

Monsieur Tarot - Sorcery/Staff/Flight - Mentor: Wonder Woman

Virgo/The Virgoan - Nature/Hand Blast/Super Speed - Mentor: Superman
(On New Frontier it's Virgo, on Virtue & Vice it's The Virgoan)

Major Victory - Gadgets/Bow/Acrobatics - Mentor: Batman

I got the game yesterday and played for several hours.
I like the graphics and it plays pretty smoothly. It's still suffering a bit from "new-game-itis" but it didn't crash while I was playing, and there wasn't much lag at all. I got DC'd a few times during loading screens. I didn't come across any major bugs. More importantly, I had a lot of fun.
Character creation isn't as full as CoH/CoV, (You just can't help comparing), but its way better then many other games. The tutorial is pretty thin, it gets you into the game, but you really need to figure out most of the game on your own. I like the voice overs from the iconic super heroes, You're constantly getting calls from Batman, or Wonder Woman, that sort of thing. The missions I've played so far are pretty average, kill 10 rats, defend some NPCs from 10 rats, fight your way past 10 rats and help some "real Superhero" kill a boss rat. But, as I said before, I had fun doing it.

My toon is only level 10, and I've only played hero side, so I can't really give a considered review yet, but it seems like a pretty solid game so far.

Anyone have plans to found a Stonewall League?

Thought I'd include a pic from the tutorial. I decided to create "Aeoriel', your typical half-naked angel alt. I gave him a flirty personality for shock value. This way while he's hanging out at the precinct houses he can give all those hot cops his "How YOU doin'?" look.

One more thing...I don't know who modded Superman for the game but I just gotta say daaaaaaaaang, Supes is definitely packing!!!

CG baskets, FTW. I'm looking forward to trying out the release version (even if only to ogle the superhero bods).

just FYI, it seems several of us have joined Q Patrol on Vice and Virtue.

They seem like a decent bunch of players, number over 40 members as of this morning. The founder was talking about setting up a sister league on villain side.

OK, I've recreated one of my beta toons (Under Archer--he's an archer who wears, well, you can probably guess) on Virtue and Vice. I'm not too sure how the teaming and super groups thing works, so I'll have to explore that.

Excellent! The pic I uploaded is my Q Patrol alt, "Aeoriel".

The teaming dynamic is admittedly a bit on the clunky side. I wish DCU could have learned from City of Heroes and had a mission window so the group could see what missions could be worked on. As of yet, I haven't found anything in the UI with that feature. I do think in the coming months that both the grouping and chat UI will get a major overhaul.

I was in Beta since September, but took a few weeks to get my account set up (thanks to someone hacking my iTunes for $10k, and Chase freezing my card, and me having to wait FOREVER for them to get me the new one).

But FINALLY.. I am there!
