Chapter 6
A NEW LOOK WITH A NEW SLUG.
(Two and a half years before the events took place)
(U.S.S. Olympus)
(Deck 3, Turbolift)
(Stardate: 84357.42)Michael is waiting for the Turbolift to arrive on Deck 4 as he is proceeding to the Transporter Room to transport to Cheldor V. The doors of the Turbolift open and Michael walks out of the Turblift and begins to walk to the Transporter Room, he walks past a few crewmember along the way, all giving a nod to say hello. He nodded back in response.
As he approaches the doors to the Transporter Room, he stops just a metre away from the doors and begins to think about what kind of person he is going to become if he decided to take the operation to be joined “illegally”. He knows that a whole lot of things would changes, his mannerisms, his walk, his attire, everything. Michael knew he was over thinking the situation and shook his head and remembered, he is there to keep an open minded and decided whether or not he would take the operation or not.
With that, Michael continued walking and the door of the Transporter Room opened. As Michael walked in, Trixie was talking to the Transporter operator who is commanding the station of the Transporter System and Gianni was waiting patiently for Michael’s arrival to the room. Michael was startled by her being there.
“I thought to see you both off, which does sucks as I was hoping to accompany you both to the Planet but as they say, the Captain has to remain on the ship”, Says Gianni
Michael looked at Gianni with a soft smile and walks towards her.
“Which is probably a good things, because if Braydon had his way, he would have ignored that rule and tagged along regardless”, says Michael.
Gianni nodded in response and sighed. “Yup, he definitely would have”, says Gianni.
She begins to walk over to the Transporter console station, and turns to the Transporter operator.
“Your relived, Lieutenant”, says Gianni.
The Lieutenant turns his heads and nods at her command. He taps a few commands into the console and walks away from the station and out of the room.
Michael and Trixie look at Gianni, they were sure as to why she relived him from his station.
Gianni walks up the step of the console area for the Transporter console.
“Starfleet has requested the Olympus’s presents in the Maelstrom to check out an unusual signal coming from Telsa 1 near the system’s star” says Gianni.
Trixie was shocked at the news of what Gianni had said, Michael frowned with disappointment, he knew that this was going to be a long week.
“I am going to leave a shuttlecraft down on the planet’s surface for you two to leave in once your business is concluded, but I am hopeful that we will be back before you will need to use it” says Gianni.
“When did you hear about these orders?” asks Michael.
Gianni didn’t say anything to his question, which was odd as he has never had an unanswered question before from her.
“Does this signal have anything to do with the Greek lettering that was displayed on my medical console before I came here?” asked Trixie
Michael was confused at what Trixie was talking about. Gianni quickly looked at Trixie and had this stone look in her eyes.
But still she said nothing.
Trixie and Michael were both puzzled as to what is going on with her and what the Greek lettering was all about as well.
“Allow me to transport you both to the surface”, says Gianni.
Michael and Trixie walked to the Transporter Pad and took their positions.
“I will see you both back on my ship, once I have checked this signal out”, says Gianni.
“Yes Ma’am”, says Trixie and Michael.
Gianni smiled and commenced tapping on the console.
“Energizing!”, says Gianni.
Both Michael and Trixie’s body materialized from the Transporter Pad and disappeared off the ship of the Olympus.
And as they both disappeared, Gianni smiled turned into a frown. She slowly taps on the console and locks the console out, and walks away from the console. She continues to walks toward the door of the Transporter Room and stops in the doorway of the room.
She turns to the Transporter Pad and she whispers, “I’m thankful, that you both aren’t on the ship.”
She turns back to the doorway and proceeds out the room.
She taps her commbadge, “Ramosa to Bridge” says Gianni.
“Bridge here Captain?” says Braydon.
“Commander, can you please Transport a Type-9 Shuttlecraft to the planet’s surface with adequate supplies in the shuttle for both Counsellor Markus and Doctor Wilcox, We are leaving the System.” Says Gianni.
“But Sir, I thought we were staying in orbit of the planet?” says Braydon.
Gianni frowned at the thought of leaving them behind, but she knows the all other orders are rescinded when dealing with the Omega threat.
“I know, Commander. But you have your orders, please carry them out. And set course to Starbase 12. Maximum warp”, says Gianni.
“Aye Sir, Setting course for Starbase 12. Maximum warp. Transporting Shuttlecraft and supplies to Cheldor V as ordered”, replies Braydon to Gianni’s orders.
“I will be on the Bridge once, we have arrived at Starbase 12, until then Commander you have the Bridge. Ramosa out”, says Gianni.
On the planet’s surface, Michael and Trixie dematerialized in the home of Doctor Vek on Cheldor V. Michael looked around his surrounding and saw a lot of diverse artefacts of holographical Borg technology along one wall, with a shelf full of books on the other covering from medical terminologies to subspace particle research to quantum mechanics. Trixie was in awe of the artwork was on the opposite end of the room. She could see a few earth artworks, which were holographical, as well as a few Bajoran and Cardassian statues.
A door opens with the Doctor Vek walking through it.
“Ah.. You have arrived. I’m guessing that this young lady is your ship’s medical officer?” asks Jilura.
Michael turns to Jilura’s voice and replies, “Yes, this is Doctor Trixie Wilcox of the U.S.S. Olympus.”
Trixie looks at Jilura and notices he is walking with a cane. She begins to walks towards Jilura.
“Nice to meet you, Doctor Vek. How’s your leg?” asks Trixie.
Michael was curious as to asking of that question. Jilura stops walking towards them when he heard her question.
“Why my dear, why do you ask that?” asks Jilura with a suspicious tone in his voice.
Trixie pulled her tricorder out and quickly scans the Doctor. As she taps on the device, she notices weird reading coming from Jilura.
“Well, just as I thought. Your not real.” Says Trixie
Michael looked at Trixie and turned his head back towards the doctor.
Jilura frowned and shook his head. “So, you know I’m a hologram.” Says Hologram Jilura.
Trixie nodded at his question. “Yes, the real Doctor Jilura Vek, had sustained injuries to his spine which impaired him from walking.” Says Trixie
Michael was shocked at this new information which is he is hearing now. Michael never saw any mentioning of Jilura being injured and not able to walk.
“Trixie? Are you sure about this?” asks Michael.
Trixie nodded again to the question.
“Yes, I am sure of this, as I was the leading doctor’s assistant to his operation a year ago.” Says Trixie.
Hologram Jilura smiled and his cane disappeared. He began to walk more normal than before the pair of them. “Unfortunately, she is correct. Doctor Jilura Vek did sustain injuries to his spine, that the leading doctor that was trying to repair, but was unsuccessful in doing so.” The hologram stopped walking towards them and turns his attention to his left.
“Please sit” says Hologram Jilura with his arm extend to his left and his hand point in the direction to where he was stating to sit.
As Michael and Trixie looked in the direction of where he was pointing, a pair of white chairs appeared out of thin air. The hologram can make commands in making the necessary arrangement of making holographic items without saying a word.
Michael and Trixie walked in the direction of the chair and sat down into them.
“Doctor Jilura Vek made wishes to not have any information indicating that he has become unable to walk, I suspects it’s due to his pride of vulnerabilities in front of others. But in the few months, after the operation failed his health slowly began to deteriorate and he began making a hologram of himself.” Says hologram Jilura.
Michael and Trixie listened to the hologram for an hour explain about how the real Doctor Jilura Vek began making the hologram after failed attempts to do so. Trixie elaborated that, due the muscle and nerve damage that he had sustained to the spine that, there was a possibility of his health declining, but it wasn’t suppose to happen until after a couple of years. The discussion lead on for a good 20 minutes with it leading to the reason for why they came to the planet.
“After Jilura had made me, I was order to pretend to be him, continue with his research on genetic mutations with Borg Technology with extreme caution of not endangering any form of life. His research also expanded into other field areas, I was able to make starship weapon frequency modulations against Borg ships and adaptive nanites to repair cellular repairs to skin tissues as well as adapting the Borg Ocular implant design into hand held energy based weapons to increase accuracy as well as energy input and output. But whilst this continued, he requested that a suitable replacement for his symbiont was to be made when his health was in danger.” Say the hologram.
Michael and Trixie eye’s shot open. The “real” Doctor Jilura Vek was dying.
“When did his health get worse?” ask Trixie.
Michael knew that his time to wait and think wasn’t going to happen as he hoped for. While Trixie was talking to the hologram about how the “real” Jilura condition was. Michael stood up.
Trixie stopped in mid-sentence and looked at Michael. The hologram Jilura looked at Michael as well.
“Trixie, can you do the operation?” ask Michael.
Trixie’s mouth dropped. She was lost for words.
“Are you sure you want to do this?” says Trixie.
Trixie knew that Michael made up his mind from the moment he heard of the doctor’s condition. She also knew that he wasn’t changing his mind about this neither.
“You didn’t answer my question. Can you do the operation? Asks Michael.
“Yes. Yes I can do the operation.” Replies Trixie.
“How soon can you be ready?” asks Michael.
The Hologram smiled knowing that his creator was going to living on in a different person.
“I should be ready in an hour.” Replies Trixie.
Michael nodded to her response. With that Trixie stood up and walked towards the door with her bag. She turns around and looks towards where Michael and the Hologram were sitting.
“Where can I set up and prepare for the operation?” asks Trixie.
The Hologram looked at her, “Through that door in front of you and you take a left and it’s the fourth door on your left. I will go and inform the Doctor of what is going on and prepare him as well.” says the hologram.
Michael sat in the chair while Trixie and the Hologram went about their ways. Michael knew when the hologram explained about what had happened with the real Doctor Vek and his injuries that he has sustained, along with the interesting breakthrough that he made.
Trixie walked back through the door she left out of and walked towards Michael.
“Michael? Do you know what this means? Are you absolutely sure about this?” says Trixie.
Michael turned in the direction of where Trixie’s voice came from.
“How do you think Braydon is going to react to this, if he finds out about this?” says Trixie.
“Trixie, I know and I have thought about what could happen, if Braydon finds out, I will cross that bridge when it comes. But right now, Doctor Vek needs your assistance.” says Michael.
Trixie knew that Michael had made his mind up. There wasn’t any way she could change his course of action. She nodded and turned towards the door begins to walk over to the door. Michael quickly walked up behind her, and placed his hand on her shoulder.
Trixie turned around to him and looked at his face, Michael could see a tear forming in her eye. Michael tilted his head down to look at her and softly smiled, and could see that Trixie really cared about what I was planning on do.
Trixie’s and Michael’s friendship was like a sibling relationship minus the fact of being born from the same mother and father and all. But they were really close, when Michael was conflicted with doubt and couldn’t tell Braydon, due to him being away on missions that are classified, which he knew there was something going on. Michael would confide with her and what he felt and what he is unsure about and they would share the same things.
Trixie has had a few guys in her life that didn’t end so well in the long run and he was always there for her at a minutes noticed.
He could tell that she was worried if that would all change with the symbiont being placed inside him.
Michael hugged her tightly, and whispered a few words into her ear.
Trixie smile with relief and a tear trickled down her cheek.
Michael loosened his grip.
“Nothing changes our friendship between you and me. Or the others, it’s just that there’s another person who would be giving their opinion when we all talk from now on, that’s all. Besides the memories and feelings that the Vek symbiont would be sharing with me” says Michael
Trixie smiled and wiped away her eye’s of the left over tears on cheek and under her eye’s. She turns away from Michael and continues to walk out the door. Michael knew he had a lot of surprises that will happen after the operation. But he knew there was one bridge that he will have problems crossing. And that was if and when Braydon finds out about this operation. But for now, he won’t mention a thing at all.
An hour had past and Michael was in a medical operations room. Michael was laying on a bed with a white gown covering his body except for a hole that was shaped in a square revealing his stomach. On the opposite side of Michael was the real Doctor Jilura Vek, he looked very white as if he hasn’t seen sunlight for a long time. His hair was neat and tidy but long and white. He laid on an operating bed as well with the same gown covering his body with a square hole showing his stomach as well. Trixie looked at Michael.
“Are you ready?” asks Trixie.
Michael turns his head and lowers his head to look at her eye to eye. “Ready as I can ever be” says Michael.
Trixie grabs the hypospray filled with a Metrazene and injected it into Jilura’s neck. Trixie sees Jilura smile. Trixie knew that he was in pain from his lifelong injuries, he must be in a lot of pain.
Michael looked to where Trixie was, “Is everything alright?”
“Yes, Jilura’s pain must have been quite high.” Says Trixie.
Michael wished that the circumstances for this were different. But there’s no turning back now.
Trixie grabbed the laser scalpel and begin to make an incision into Jilura’s stomach to allow access and room for her hand and symbiont to be pulled out and detaching it from him.
Michael was laying there, on the bed breathing carefully and calmly. He knew of what happens to trills that are selected incorrectly from not having proper training.
Trixie was began to pull the symbiont out of Jilura’s stomach. The symbiont was quite large, it was bigger than her hand, luckily that the Jilura hologram was able to assist with the operation. Trixie handle the symbiont carefully.
“Jilu, can you please clamp and cut the cord off on the patient from the symbiont, please” says Trixie.
Since there was two Jilura’s in the room, Trixie made it necessary to nickname the hologram “Jilu”, to save herself from becoming confused with who she is speaking to.
“Yes Doctor, cutting the cord now.” says Jilu.
Jilu placed the clamp just half an inch below the symbiont to where it connects the symbiont and Jilura.
Jilura looked at his holographic-self and smiled.
“Thank you for helping me, son” says Jilura.
Jilu looked down at his creator, “No sir, thank you” says Jilu.
Jilu cuts the cord connecting the symbiont to Jilura. Immediately Jilura’s eyes quickly shut, and he was gone.
Trixie moved her hand with the symbiont over to where Michael was laying.
Jilu was about to make an incision on Michael’s stomach.
Michael could feel his breathing was coming more frequent with each breath.
Jilu made the incision large enough to allow the symbiont to fit in.
Trixie began to approach Michael’s stomach with the symbiont in hand.
“Can you lift the opening of the patient’s stomach for the symbiont please, Jilu” says Trixie.
Jilu lifted the opening for her.
“Well, here it comes. Wow. Those were the same words when Braydon and I had……”
Trixie began inserting the symbiont into Michael.
Michael felt the slug being placed in.
“Yup. Same feeling just minus the whole moaning and biting.”
And with that the symbiont was in Michael’s stomach.
Trixie grabbed the dermal regenerator and sealed Michael’s stomach up.
Michael’s eyes shut as well.
Michael’s mind was whirling with images and feelings for the Vek symbiont. He saw all of Vek’s past host.
“Friya, Dinos, Thelden, Jaret, Lintra, Caisis, Vernet, Kival”
All the images of the children that his symbiont has experienced. The feelings of loved ones lost. The skills and knowledge of all the things that was accomplished throughout its life with other hosts.
Michael’s eye slowly open up and his facial mannerism changed, he smiled with a tilt to the left and his left eye squinting harder than the right side.
Trixie was dermal regenerating Jilura’s stomach from the incision that was made to remove the symbiont.
Jilu looked at Michael and it could tell that his creator has lived on inside of its new host.
“Hello my old friend” says Michael.
“Sir, how are you feeling” say Jilu.
Michael thought about how he felt, he knew he mentally felt different, but physically he felt like he was pumped up and ready to run around and jump through hoops.
“I feel like I had my finger stuck inside of a warp core and energized from it to getting physical for some odd reason” says Michael.
Michael thought about why he felt like that. He could recall from one of his host, that Thelden, was a champion wrestler with martial art capabilities which his past host learnt while on earth as well.
Trixie grabbed her tricorder, and passively scanned Michael to see his vital.
“Well, it looks like the symbiont and you are ok. It has responded well to the operation. Just take it easy.” says Trixie.
Michael looked at Trixie, he smiled at her and gave her a hug. Trixie was shocked by the sudden hug.
“Thank you Trixie.” says Michael.
Trixie looked puzzled as to why he is thanking her.
“Why are you thanking me” says Trixie.
“Cause, I wasn’t sure if you were able to push herself through with it, Cause Michael wasn’t sure himself” says Michael.
Trixie stepped back. Confused at the third person answer.
“Ummm, why are you speaking in third person?” says Trixie.
“Sorry, I meant I wasn’t sure myself. I think, it’s just information overload and needing to really think before speaking, which is kinda new, cause I never had an issue with speaking and using the right words in sentences.” says Michael.
Jilu turns to Trixie, “It’s common for some trill who haven’t been training themselves for the joining of host to symbiont. He just needs time and patience in thinking and separating memories and names from his past host lives to who he is.” says Jilu.
Trixie was concerned regardless, so thought that it would be best that she kept an eye on him for a while.
The next few hours was fascinating for Michael, he was looking at Doctor Vek’s research that he studying on years ago before his health started to become serious.
Doctor Vek was looking into the application of using Borg Nanites that could be used to spreading vaccines with the use of a torpedo casing without risking medical staff to being exposed.
The way Jilura was looking at ways to improve life was off, but he knew there was a method to his madness.
“What are you reading Michael?” ask Trixie
Michael looked at Trixie, she must have come into the room without him knowing. She slowly approached Michael.
“Just some theorizes that Jilura was thinking of doing. It’s amazing!” replies Michael.
Michael passes her the PADD that he was reading from. Trixie takes the PADD from him and starts reading the technical information that Michael had mentioned.
“Reprogaming the nanites to analyze and develop antibodies within the body of those exposed to certain diseases with the use of the exist disease. It has the potential to cause minor discomfort for the patient, as it causes the disease to rapidly accelerate in order to procure the necessary antibodies to cure the patient. If this is to succeed I would need to have a few patients that would be willing to allow the nanites to do their job.”
Trixie looked disgusted with the thought of using live subjects to test out a theory.
“This is amazing? The use of human beings?” say Trixie.
Michael frowned when Trixie questioned him on what she read.
“No. Not that technique or the use of patients. The theory to being able to use nanites in the fashion is correct diseases, but the next entry is what I found interesting.” says Michael.
Trixie looked back the PADD.
“With the incident at Vendor 4, I have thought to rethink the applications in being able to improve life. So the use of nanites on a planetary level should never be used regardless of the high outcome of improving life and removing of diseases. So I am refocusing my efforts in improving current Federation technology in all fields with the use of the nanites. One idea I have thought seeing if I could find a way to adapt the use of remodulation on ship’s shielding systems to majorly reduce damage and being able to absorb the incoming energy to re-energize lose of power from ship’s systems.”
Trixie saw the stardate of the two entries. There was a 6 months gap between the two entries.
“So, he had an epiphany, only after his experiment killed those people on the planet.” says Trixie.
Passing back the PADD to Michael.
“I did or he did in this case, and I recall what he felt when his theory had the opposite effect to what it was theorized.” says Michael.
Trixie was standing near Michael, while he was sitting in the egg seat that he had request to Jilu to make for him. The egg seat was a big mental framed alcove with a big soft seat and backing to relax in. The frame was white, with the pillows were white as well to match the décor of the study room that Jilura used to research things and ponder on his next idea. Next to where Michael was sitting were some similar sitting from early when they first came to the planet, with a small coffee table that was metal framed, colored white with a soft edging marble top. On top of the table was a cup of tea, it had a citrus smell to it, with bergamot flavour.
Trixie sat on the seat nearest to Michael.
“And on that note, how are you feeling? Any unusual pain or discomfort?” asks Trixie.
Michael places the PADD that Trixie had given back to him on the coffee table, he grabs the cup of tea and bring the cup to his lips and slowly blows on it to cool it off and stops blowing for a brief second.
“Just noticing the change in beverages preferences. I had never had this tea before the joining, and now I drink as if I had this before in the last couple of hours.” says Michael.
“It’s just one of things that you will have to get used to. Don’t be surprised if your attire changes as well.” says Michael.
Michael resumed blowing on his tea, and raised his left eye brow. He takes a sip of the tea, and places the cup down on the table.
“Well I had thought of, instead of wearing the slacks that I usually wear, I was thinking of trying out some pants that would be tight, like skinny jeans that was worn back on earth. I had be intrigued in wearing them.” says Michael
Trixie looked at Michael and softly laughed.
“I guess I spoke too soon.” replies Trixie.
Michael laughed very casually to Trixie’s response.
“So, how long are you planning on observing for before we leave to catch up with the Olympus?” asks Michael.
Trixie’s laughing slowly eased off.
“So you knew I was watching you. Well I wanted to be sure that there wasn’t any problems that I need to know of.” replies Trixie.
“I know. I know. You are wanting to be sure that there isn’t any unforeseeable concerns or warnings.” says Michael.
Trixie smiled when he said that. She felt glad that he could see her when she is concern or distressed about things still.
“Well, I haven’t seen anything yet. But I can continue to observing your condition while we travel back to the Olympus. Which by the way, the Olympus has sent us a message.” says Trixie.
Michael curiosity peaked. It was only a day since they had heard from them since they depart to the Maelstrom.
“What did they say?” asks Michael.
“They said that they will be at Starbase 12 for the next 5 days for repairs, it seems that they had suffered engine and weapons damage from their mission. So the Captain Ramosa had said that a vessel has been sent out to pick us up. And you are to expect a surprise when they arrive.” replies Trixie.
Michael body began to quiver with anticipation and he had a feeling that whatever the surprise was, he knew what it was.
“I already know what the surprise is.” says Michael.
Trixie looked at Michael as if he knew more than she did.
“How do you know that?” asks Trixie.
Michael slowly got up from the egg seat.
“Call it, intuition.” replies Michael.
“How long until they arrive?” asks Michael.
Trixie slowly got up and grabbed his cup and smelt it, it was intriguing her senses on what he drank.
“Lady gray?” replies Trixie.
Michael’s face scrunched up with a puzzled look.
“Ummm I don’t think I had heard of that kind of time arrival before.” says Michael.
Trixie shock her head.
“No silly. Your tea. It’s Lady Gray.” says Trixie
Michael turned to Trixie and saw her holding her cup of tea and smelling it.
“Oh I didn’t know what it was. I found it in the replicator. And if you were curious on it, you could have checked the replicator, if you were that intrigued.” says Michael.
“I will have to keep that in mind. The U.S.S. Maelstrom will be arriving in a couple of hours. I wish I had more time to make sure that you are alright and all.” Says Trixie.
Michael smiled he was excited about getting off the planet and getting home to Braydon.
But Michael had just recalled something that he didn’t think about.
“We are going to have to ask the Maelstrom to allow us to come back in a shuttle, otherwise they will have a record of me with the symbiont inside of me and we will have to make sure that no one has a medical record of me without one.” says Michael.
Trixie knew that this would need to be done. Due to her understanding of transporter technology and people with phobias of being transported.
“That shouldn’t be a problem, we can work around that situation.” says Trixie.
Michael was glad that she thought that one through.
Michael’s eye were starting to feel heavy, he felt exhausted.
“Seems like my tiredness has caught up to me. I’m going to rest for a while.” Said Michael.
Michael got up and walked over to Trixie and gave her a guy. After the hug he proceeded to walk out of the room and to his room to retire of the rest of the time until the Maelstrom arrived.
End of chapter.
