Re:ST: Battlefront "Crucible"

((ok, this ep may get shorted given the amount of distractions and my inability to write court drama. Feedback is appreciated.))

Edgar sat next to Commander Malek as the Judging council arrived, now with the inclusion of Admirals T’nae and Zelle. At Malek’s advice, Edgar wore his dress-whites as opposed to his standard dress uniform. Both officers were well aware of the power that color still played through the Federation. Quinn spoke first, “To recap, Lieutenant Calvin, the charges you face in this general court-martial are as the following: Insubordination; Gross Negligence; Disorderly Conduct; Attempted Perjury; Terrorism; and Treason. Your prior testimony in the board of inquiry states you have pled ‘not guilty’ to all charges and intend to plead as such today, does this still stand?”

Rohan and Eddie nodded in agreement, allowing Admiral Quinn to continue, “Prosecution has the opening statement.”

The entire crowd was in a stunned silence. Most were expecting the insubordination and disorderly conduct charges, but the other charges seemed excessive even to those against Eddie. All eyes turned from Eddie to the prosecuting Judge Advocate Officer.

Lieutenant Elizabeth Suarez stood and began her opening statement. “Thank you, Admirals. Through the course of this trial, a great many horrible truths will be revealed that have occurred over the past month, all of which are true. It is horrible to think that even one of the following crimes was committed by one man, but all of them make the acts even more unforgivable.

“Lieutenant Edgar Calvin has a long list of charges against him. Insubordination: for disobeying orders from both Admiral Quinn and Captain Oren-De. Gross Negligence: For allowing 73 deaths to happen under his command, as well as for the loss of the U.S.S. New Orleans. Disorderly Conduct: For disrespecting an Ambassador of Vulcan. Attempted Perjury: For his refusal to cooperate with an ongoing investigation. Treason: For creating a virus that violates the Federation Charter and Constitution, as interpreted by recent laws. Terrorism: For utilizing this virus to commit genocide. For these actions to be found in one person makes Lieutenant Calvin nothing less than a monster, and he should be found guilty as such.”

Eddie sneered at the claims, knowing now how specifically this prosecution intended to paint him. He glanced at Commander Malek and nodded. As Lieutenant Suarez took her seat, Malek stood and took the stage of the courtroom. “Admirals, the claims from the prosecution are nothing more than someone seeking a scapegoat. Lieutenant Calvin is the unfortunate victim in a series of unfortunate events. He made no disrespect to any Vulcan Ambassador, and he was under strict orders not to discuss anything.

“As for the allegations of Terrorism and Treason, both are skewed in extremist opinions. The final charge of Gross Negligence is nothing more than a desperate grasp from a weak stance that anyone could have beaten a true no-win scenario. In the course of this trial, I will prove that Lieutenant Calvin should not be punished, but commended for how he handled his month of command.”

As Commander Malek took his seat while Eddie watched Lieutenant Suarez begin her prosecution, bringing forth the first pieces of a long list of evidence against him. He caught her glance as she took the floor once again.

Re:Final Fantasy XIII

March 31 2010
We've been investing a considerable amount of time into XIII also! I sort of miss the open feeling of the earlier games. I like XIII but it's very linear. For me VII sort of defined an era. It was the first time a fantasy game had really gotten my attention. I remember my cousins playing I and II (IV), but I was never interested until VII. I have a lot of fond memories of playing VII into the wee hours of the morning with friends!

Re:ST: Pandora "Passing"

March 30 2010
Maggie and Will walked out of the room where the board of inquiry concerning Lieutenant Calvin had just finished its initial session. Even behind his visor, the look of irritation on the ensign's face was apparent.

"What was that!? His ship gets destroyed by an Undine dreadnaught and they want to court-martial him? How is that fair?"

Maggie was frowning in thought as she glanced back into the room they had come from.

"Well, to be fair, court-martial procedures are standard after the loss of a ship, and from what I've gathered, Lieutenant Calvin has had a pretty unusual month as a Starfleet captain. That said, this is definitely not what I was expecting when the JAG requested me as an expert witness."

"Yeah. Why did they request you, anyway?"

Maggie frowned deeper. "Sorry, but that's classified. At least, I think it is. Right now, the only thing I'm sure of is how annoyed I am that the JAG called me here just to testify in the court-martial of a child."

"That's not fair, Maggie. The guy has had a rough time of it."

"Then the club can throw him a welcome party," Maggie said with a dismissive wave of her hand. "All I know is that man's antics and behavior have cost me literally weeks of time that would have been better spent on more fruitful areas of research."

Will was about to respond when their comm badges let out a chirp, followed by Oren-De's voice. "Senior staff, please report to the Pandora's conference room at 1100 hours." There was a pause, and Oren-De's voice seemed to shift from its normal authoritative tone to one that was a bit more awkward. "... and apologies for interrupting your shore leave."

Maggie raised an eyebrow. "I wonder what that was about." Will wasn't sure if she meant the sudden request for a meeting or Oren-De's odd final statement.

Oren-De's message went to most of the Pandora's senior staff save for two people: War'en and Redwing. The two were in the middle of Yosemite National Park, a few hours to the northeast of Starfleet Headquarters in San Francisco. Surrounded by tall redwoods that stretched up to the clear blue sky, Redwing was looking at War'en in disbelief.

"... Sadda's dead?"

War'en nodded. "It sounds like it was a freak accident. He was crushed by a mag lift that went out of control. It happened almost 36 hours ago, so time is becoming a factor. I am reporting to Starfleet Medical a--"

"You can't be serious!"

War'en looked at Redwing in shock. "Of course I am. Red, this is something I'm bound to do."

"You're 30! Most Joinings are done when a Trill is in their early or mid 20s. It's too dangerous."

War'en shook his head. "I was still judged to be a fit host by the Symbiosis Commission when they reviewed the results of my last comprehensive physical. A physical you conducted, by the way."

Red looked at War'en in what almost looked liked desperation. Before he could grasp at another straw, War'en placed his hands gently on the other man's arms.

"Red... why are you so surprised by this? I told you when we started dating that I had been chosen as a Host for the Sadda symbiont."

The medical officer looked down from War'en's gaze. "I know. I know you told me, but... I didn't think it would actually happen. Rear Admiral Sadda was still on the young side, he had a couple good decades left him in before he'd even retire. I thought you'd pass out of the acceptable age range and another Host would be selected long before he died."

"Understandable. I'm pretty surprised too. But, even then, why are you against this? Being Joined is a great honor for me, you know that."

Red looked up at War'en in frustration. "A great honor!? Will it be a great honor when that thing takes over your personality? And don't tell me it won't, War. Don't think I haven't read Starfleet Medical's database on Trill Symbionts inside and out. I know damn well that once they put that thing in you that... you may not be you anymore."

"That only happens in a few cases..."

"And one of them involved the Sadda symbiont!" Red exclaimed, his voice raised. "Don't you get it, War!? You're asking me to let you march off and die! I can't do that!" His voice lowered as he stepped back from War'en. "I... I just can't. I'm sorry." With that, Red turned and began walking away.

"Red, wait!"

War'en began walking after him, but Red tapped his comm badge. "Dr. Redwing to Pandora, one to beam up."

War watched as the blue shimmer of a transporter beam whisked Red away, leaving War alone in the forest. He could still chase after him, but he'd gotten the message. Red wanted to be left alone.

ST: Battlefront "Crucible"

March 30 2010
[[Episode 1.5]

“Everyone, please be seated...This board of inquiry has been required by the convening authorities of Admirals Quinn, and Hollis.” Admiral Luca Giovanni announced as he took his seat.

Desmond leaned over and whispered to Solek, but he was hushed and the two continued to listen. Summer leaned over to Des and whispered herself. “What did he say?”

“ ‘Its standard procedure, now shut up.’ ” Desmond quoted, and the two met with another shush from Solek. Edgar had been asked a question and was responding.

“Sir, the incidents aboard the Khitomer and the Vega Colony are completely independent from the events leading to the destruction of the New Orleans. I request that they remain separate entities between this inquiry and any future inquiries.”

“Be that as it may be, the events are too close in occurrence to be mutually exclusive. It is hereby my recommendation that a general court-martial be held immediately and in junction to this inquiry to determine the severity and ramifications of your actions as a Starfleet officer over the past month.” Admiral Giovanni announced sounding horribly ominous.

“I second the recommendation. We will convene tomorrow at 0900 hours.” Admiral Hollis announced as the gavel banged. The entire audience stood and murmurs drowned any continued whispering. Admiral Quinn noticeably avoided contact with Edgar through the proceedings, and the rejection was as vicious as the words the other two had spoken.

---

On the lawn of Starfleet Headquarters, Solek stood with Desmond and Summer as he waited for Turek and Aron to join them. The former bridge officers of the New Orleans nodded as they convened at the steps outside the JAG office. “Ensigns, it pleases me to se you all gathered here.”

“What’s going on, sir?” Des asked his superior.

“It is a standard protocol to launch a court-martial at the loss of a ship. It should be considered that Captain James Kirk and even Ambassador Picard have gone through this very process. However...”

“However what, sir?” Turek pressed. “What exactly was the Cap--Lieutenant’s involvement and why does it have significance?”

Solek sighed heavily. “On a matter of inevitable discovery I see no need to keep this information classified. While on the Khitomer he utilized the infamous ‘Borg cure’ virus that’s been circling the subspace frequencies rumors – a virus that he wrote. This complicates the standard investigation, compounded by the fact that he was assigned command as only a lieutenant.”

“It’s a drumhead trial.” Summer said in shock.

“It appears so.”

---

“At ease, Lieutenant.” Commander Rohan Malek stated when he entered the briefing room. Edgar took his seat and smoothed his uniform. “...it seems like you’ve gotten yourself into one hell of a mess in just a matter of weeks.”

Eddie looked over the list and sighed heavily. It seemed the reports from Captain Oren-De and Lt. Matoya had been added as complaints to the proceedings. “It can be seen that way, sir. Can I ask a personal question?”

“I expect you to, Lieutenant. Ask away.”

“Given the list of charges brought against me in this court-marshal, are you capable of keeping an unbiased opinion and defend me to your best ability, at or above standard offered by the JAG office?” Eddie’s usage of political speak impressed the commander with a concerning level.

Commander Malek smiled. “I can promise that, Lieutenant. Now, let’s begin...”

---

“Are you certain this is absolutely necessary, Captain?” Admiral Quinn asked as he looked out of his office onto the view of Earth. Admiral Giovanni and Captain Hollis sat in the office with their own drinks, examining the relevant reports and logs.

A black-uniformed Captain smiled as she took a sip of her drink, moving to sit next to Hollis and Giovanni. “I recognize you don’t completely agree with my methods, Quinn, but I assure you, this is necessary.”

I've tried fixing this issue several times and I just can't figure it out. It's a bit beyond my skills. My only suggestion is to try Firefox, even if just to add friends. I'm gonna be updating some things in the Network section over the next few weeks. It'll hopefully fix this issue for all the browsers that are having the problem.

I've been playing the crap outta FFXIII since i came out. Totally took sick days from work in order to play it. Beat it a while ago, but I've been doing after credits play for side missions, trophies, etc.

Also, FFX was and still is the best in the series, though I did like FFXII and VIII. Also, I don't think VII was really all that great.

ST: Pandora "Passing"

March 26 2010
Episode 1.4. "Passing"

Admiral Quinn stood up from his desk as Oren-De entered his office on Earth Stardock. The admiral glanced over to Commander Sulu, who acknowledged the nonverbal command with a nod and quickly ushered two officers he was speaking with out of the room. Oren-De glanced at the departing officers as the doors shut behind them, and it all caused him to wonder what this debriefing was really about. He suppressed his curiosity however, and stood at attention.

"Commander Oren-De reporting, sir. I was informed that you wished to see me."

Quinn nodded. "Yes, Commander. Please, have a seat. Can I get you anything to drink?"

Normally Oren-De would have politely refused, but all that he had had to deal with since rescuing the crew of the New Orleans was beginning to take it's toll on him. "Coffee, sir. Black."

"Excellent. Two coffees, black," said Quinn to his desktop replicator. On the side of the desk, two coffees in white mugs that bore the Starfleet insignia shimmered into being. The admiral passed one toward Oren-De, who accepted it gratefully.

"Thank you, sir," he said simply, and took a drink while he waited for the admiral to begin. While he had only been introduced to what Humans called 'coffee' during his time at the Academy, Oren-De had found it very similar to a Giiyen, a stimulating drink from Enhasa. In addition to being useful when a day was wearing long on him, coffee also provided him with a brief taste of home.

Quinn took a quick sip of his own drink before cutting to the chase. "As you now know, Starfleet JAG has taken custody of Lieutenant Calvin. I expect that his trial will begin quickly. As you also know, Lieutenant Matoya is being called as an expert witness in the case regarding his Borg... program. Until the trial is over, the Pandora is to remain here at Earth Stardock."

Oren-De gave a slight frown. "Acknowledged, sir. However... may I ask as to why the Pandora, along with the Kirk, was required to transport Lieutenant Matoya here?"

"Yes, it does seem wasteful, doesn't it," Quinn noted, taking another sip of his coffee. "We decided that, given your science officer's knowledge of the Borg, Calvin's program, and the lengths the Klingons have demonstrated they're willing to go to acquire both as demonstrated by their attack on the Kinet IV science outpost, it would be best that she and Calvin have an escort. The matter is sufficiently sensitive that Starfleet Intelligence insisted."

Oren-De nodded. He still didn't agree with the decision, but he was appreciative for the justification all the same. The admiral continued.

"As for why you're remaining here until the conclusion of the hearing, the reason is two-fold. Primarily, I don't want to waste even more manpower escorting your Matoya back to the Pandora after you've returned to the Klingon front. However, there is another matter that, given its sensitive nature, I wanted to speak with you about personally."

Admiral Quinn tapped a button his desk. "Crewman Donovan, bring Lieutenant Commander Lok in, please."

Oren-De looked over his shoulder toward the office's door in surprise as a young crewman escorted his first officer and Chief of Engineering, War'en Lok, in. The Trill, who seemed just as surprised as Oren-De, approached and stood at attention next to his captain's seat. Oren-De wondered if this had anything to do with the discussion he had had with War'en recently regarding Oren-De's treatment of the crew.

"I apologize for all the secrecy, but this seemed the most appropriate way to inform both of you of the current situation," Admiral Quinn began as he motioned to the monitor behind him. With another tap on his console, the monitor blinked to life with the dossier image of a Trill. He looked to be in his late middle-age, perhaps a little younger than Quinn. War'en immediately recognized the person on the screen, but he kept silent as the Admiral continued.

"This is Rear Admiral Izen Sadda, of the Starfleet Corps of Engineers. His chief project, on which he has been working since his days at the Academy, has been the adaptation of Borg technology to Starfleet designs. A great deal of his work has been key to the development of Starfleet's personal shield technology, as well as the development of the Federation's transwarp network."

War'en nodded. Oren-De glanced at his first officer before returning his attention back to Quinn, relieved that this apparently had nothing to do with his earlier discussions with War'en.

"These days, in addition to that work , he was also involved in analyzing the Borg technology we recovered from the ships that attacked the Vega colony."

War'en's's face became suspicious as he picked up on Quinn's language. "Excuse me, Admiral. He was working on this?"

The older Trill nodded gravely as he turned to look directly at War'en. "30 hours ago, Rear Admiral Sadda was killed in an accident. A magnetic lift malfunctioned and sped out of control. Sadda happened to be in front of it, and the lift crushed him against a wall. He died of massive internal injuries."

Oren-De was surprised to see War'en become incredibly pale in the face. Indeed, it was a terrible accident, but it seemed odd that simply being told about it would put his first officer at such unease. He looked back at Admiral Quinn in confusion. "Sir, while it is a loss for Starfleet that Rear Admiral Sadda died so suddenly, I don't understand what this has to do with myself and Mr. Lok."

Admiral Quinn was about to speak before War'en cut in.

"Read Admiral Sadda is... was... joined with a symbiont. Now that he's dead, I'm to be the next host."
