I have a big pet peeve. I find it very annoying when people use a gradient in place of the Rainbow Flag. It bothers me to the very core and I find it utterly hideous.

Case in point:

Isn't it awful?

The Rainbow Flag is made of 6 (Not 7 or 8, turquoise and hot pink were dropped for good reason. Get over it people.) stripes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and purple and in that order!

The Rainbow flag incorporates the three primary and secondary colors. This provides the complimentary color (the secondary color) for each primary color which helps the piece look more vivid and bright. As well, the different stripes help provide balance through the entire flag. The gradient mean while just looks plain awful.

I have to say, I don't entirely disagree with you... However there is no true Orange in most computer design, as it often comes out more brownish in tone or some odd color I just prefer to go with the gradient.

Another interesting effect is that you get odd lines of color where you don't want them, this singe pixel redish color between the blue and violet is very distracting in my opinion.

Monitors are incapable of producing pure spectral indigo (440nm), so it makes that the line midway between blue and purple looks "off".

Not only is this a gradient fail, but a magic eraser fail. Dave, you should be ashamed.

Despite the very valid and inclusive points which have been made in support of the Gradient, personally, I agree with the OP. I like the distinctive bars of the Rainbow flag because of the history and evolution of social change that it represents. When I see a gradient standing in for the rainbow flag, I think that the people responsible are being deceitful in a mercenary/political/commercial "wishy-washy-I-want-something-from-the-LGBT-community-but-I'm-too-afraid-to-make-a-bold-definitive-show-of-support" sort of way.

I mean it's a flag of PRIDE - not some graphic designer's digital tie-dye experiment!

If the Gradient was adopted as a socially inclusive evolution of the Rainbow bars I'd be all for it - but as an alternative, I say "Nay". People should know the history and why the bars are there and what they represent - so that in the future there will never be a need this flag or anything like it.

P.S. Not only have I picked up women because of the bumper stickers on their car and not dated women because of the same (fish fenders are a definite deal breaker) but I have been fired from a job because of a bumper sticker that I refused to remove from my car.

P.P.S. For the record - I'm a hippy who has lived through the '60s. I am quite fond of tie-dye. It's just that flags by definition are symbolic. Some symbols are good, some jingoistic and bad, but they should be acknowledged for the sake of lessons learned via historical record.
