Its 27 million-year orbit could also explain a pattern of mass extinctions on Earth, scientists say.

Do they mean that once in every 27 million years it gets close enough to earth to cause mass extinction? ... Thats like soon! :S

New massive object found within our solar system?

February 16 2011
Or possibly as part of our outer solar system.

From: http://news.blogs.cnn.com/2011/02/15/scientists-telescope-hunt-massive-hidden-object-in-space/?npt=NP1

You know how you sometimes can sense that something is present even though you can't see it? Well, astronomers are getting that feeling about a giant, hidden object in space.

And when we say giant, we mean GIANT.

Evidence is mounting that either a brown dwarf star or a gas giant planet is lurking at the outermost reaches of our solar system, far beyond Pluto. The theoretical object, dubbed Tyche, is estimated to be four times the size of Jupiter and 15,000 times farther from the sun than Earth, according to a story in the British paper The Independent.

Astrophysicists John Matese and Daniel Whitmire from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette think data from NASA's infrared space telescope WISE will confirm Tyche's existence and location within two years.

The presence of such a massive object in the solar system's far-flung Oort Cloud could explain a barrage of comets from an unexpected direction, according to a December article at Space.com.

Its 27 million-year orbit could also explain a pattern of mass extinctions on Earth, scientists say.

Brown dwarfs are cold "failed" stars; their dimness and lack of heat radiation can make them hard to detect. Gas giants are huge planets – like Saturn, Jupiter and Neptune – that are made up of gases and may lack a solid surface like Earth's.

Whitmire told The Independent that Tyche will probably be composed of hydrogen and helium and have colorful spots, bands and clouds like Jupiter.

"You'd also expect it to have moons," he said. "All the outer planets have them."

Tyche was first hypothesized in 1984 as Nemesis, a dark companion star to the sun. It's been the subject of astronomical research and debate ever since. In July, another Space.com article said the celestial evidence suggests Tyche could not possibly exist.

To distinguish it from the Nemesis star theory, Matese and Whitmire are calling their object Tyche, after the good sister of the goddess Nemesis in Greek mythology.

Their research is published in Icarus, the International Journal of Solar System Studies.

Re: What's the story, if any, to your ship names?

February 15 2011
Well, I have since renamed my ship (again).

My latest name for my ship is the USS Challenger. Named both for the shuttle and it's namesake, the HMS Challenger. A science ship from the mid 19th century.

My alt has since named her Delta Flyer the Trieste, after the bathyscaphe which reached the bottom of the Challenger Deep (about 35 thousand feet deep)

Re: "Born This Way" is the new gay anthem?

February 15 2011
I love this song a lot. Yeah, the melody sounds a lot like "Express Yourself" at first, but Gaga definitely puts her own stamp on it. Plus, in a rather ironic twist, this song is way, way more about expressing one's true self than Madonna's song ever was. I know that this is going to piss off a lot of Madonna fans, but I wouldn't call "Born This Way" a rip-off of "Express Yourself"; I'd call it a fucking upgrade.

Cannot wait for the new album. I think people expecting more of the same are going to be disappointed, but I think expecting that from Gaga is a fool's errand to begin with. :D

Re: Copying your Keybinds

February 14 2011
Also, if you have different binds for your tac, eng or science, you can type

/bind_save_file Tactical.txt (or eng or sci)

Then when you make a new one:

/bind_load_file Tactical.txt

Alternatively, if you've spent a while setting up keybinds, macros etc on one toon and then suddenly decide you don't like them and want to reroll them as a different race or career:

/bind_save_file Bobgroundbinds.txt
/bind_save_file Bobspacebinds.txt

(keeping in mind that you have to be on the ground to save/load ground binds and in space to save/load space binds)

then /bind_load_file when you are ready. :) Saved me soooooo much trouble early on in STO when I was constantly deleting and rerolling.

Copying your Keybinds

February 14 2011
If you have multiple characters and wish to copy key binds from one to another or wish to backup your key binds, you can use the following method.

This method requires typing slash commands into the chat window. It also requires saving and loading ground and space key binds seperately.
Saving Key Bind sets

1. When in the location whose bindings you wish to save, hit the ENTER key or click in the chat text box.
2. Type the following:

/bind_save_file DefaultGround.txt or /bind_save_file DefaultSpace.txt depending on the location.

3. Hit ENTER.

This saves file(s) in your STO directory with your character's current key bindings.
Loading Key Bind sets

The files you created in the save prodecure can be used to restore key binds to an existing character or apply them to a new one.

1. When in the location whose bindings you wish to load, hit the ENTER key or click in the chat text box.
2. Type the following:

/bind_load_file DefaultGround.txt or /bind_load_file DefaultSpace.txt depending on the location.

3. Hit ENTER.

Notes

There is no confirmation text when you have done this correctly, or error text when you have not.

These procedures can be used for all characters created, you can also exchange these files with other players to try out their key binds.

You can change the names of the text files in the load and save commands and you can include a drive and path if you don't want them directly in your STO folder.

Using the DefaultGround.txt and DefaultSpace.txt names will assign these key binds to all new characters created.

This information was provided by Wolfiesden on the STO Forums.

As a very new member I would love to see expanding into other games, but I agree that going slow is the best option if we do. I mean, look at the flop of FF14 :( Plus there seems to be a new MMO every, what, 3 months? I mean Rift is coming out in early March lol

Greetings Stonewall Fleet, I am Commodore Edward Valor, XO of Global Division and in command of External/Internal affairs of 3rd Fleet, I also act as an ambassador for 3rd.

I have two other Ambassadors who are under my Command, Commander Riftweasel and Viktor who will be saying hello as well soon.

I am here to pay in kind the greetings from your Ambassador Doogiegood on our forums and would like to very much like begin diplomatic relations between our two fleets.

We here at 3rd Fleet believe STO can be made more fun by sharing the experience with other people and getting other fleets involved. We have had many numerous Joint Fleet Actions with other Allied Fleets which all have been great fun, so maybe a Fleet Action can be the first step towards a new friendship?

I look forward to talking to you all at Stonewall Fleet!
