The 1980's Tom Baker could have been a good captain, although they would have to have found a way to work in his Doctor Who scarf.

Roddy McDowall is another one I'd love to have seen as a captain.

I vote Hugo Weaving, I think he could make a very different style of captain to the cohort we're used to.

Otherwise, how about Alexander Skarsgård, since there must be some hot captains out there somewhere! :-D

Of all mentioned to this point, I think Diana Rigg would make the coolest captain. Or David Tennant for the eye candy. :-)

Assignment: Earth would have been a very cool show. I think it would have fit very well with the zeitgeist of the '60s.

I like all the suggestions here. And I'll add Ben Browder, not because I watched Farscape or Stargate, but because of how he manages to fill out whatever uniform they put him in. Sigh.
