Re: How Has Star Trek Impacted You?

March 31 2014
Unlike most people I seem to talk to, my first introduction to Star Trek was the original series. For several years, my parents went through a bit of a rough patch and had separated, leaving me to spend the weekdays living with my mom and going to school, and the weekends with my dad. I'm not sure how it all started, but at some point, I must have seen an original series episode on TV, and had obviously taken to it. Money was tight back then, but I remember that on the Friday at the end of every week, my dad brought home in his briefcase, an original series episode on VHS for me, until I had nearly the entire collection. These VHS cases became a very familiar sight for me and brought me to a smile, every time.

Even as an adult, I own every single Star Trek episode from every single series, including the original series, a collection that I have spread across DVDs and iTunes. I re-watch original series episodes over lunch, and while I sometimes cringe at some of the acting, it still makes me really happy to sit down and watch an episode.

Star Trek has been a huge part of my life ever since I was a kid, and it's impacted every aspect of who I am today. From trying to be a good and fair person in the way I live my life, to picking a job that reflected that vision, to joining this online Star Trek community and watching re-runs of the show nearly every day. It's not that I consider myself a hardcore fan, it's just that Trek has become my comfortable and familiar companion, reminding me of how to be a good person and always taking me on new adventures, no matter how many times I've seen an episode.

Then there's poor Julien, (who was a complete non-Trekkie when I first met him), but who's now seen every series of Trek, has been to the Vegas convention with me (this year will be his second), and even has a costume to wear on costume night, this time around! (Not even I have a costume, lol).

Yeah... I think it's fairly safe to say Trek plays a big role in my life, and I wouldn't have it any other way B)

Well done, Chris!! B) Awesome work.

It was weird for me when I was 14, when I realized that I was growing out of the usual cartoons and stuff I was into before then. I was left reeling and with a wandering imagination. I needed something more than simple fantasy worlds and video games (even though those played good parts of my childhood.)

One night I was bored, flipping through channels on TV. And there came on Star Trek: The Next Generation, and without thinking about it I just put the remote down. The Best of Both Worlds episodes were on. "This show is awesome..." I said to myself as the 2nd hour concluded.

While it was heavily syndicated with re-runs of episodes often showing, I then found out that TNG was about to wrap up its 5th season, and I caught part one of Time's Arrow when it premiered that weekend, again left reeling for more! So between watching reruns of previous seasons, and the weekly new episodes... I watched every airing religiously. The following year my parents took me to a Trek convention in Boston. I got a Uniform, a combadge, and one pip to hold the rank of Ensign.

Reality hit me when my dad passed away in ’94. Everything changed and my world seemed shattered with him gone. The grieving months went by, but next to my family, I escaped to TNG, putting my uniform on and acting episodes out in parts. I always felt safe there, getting lost in the stories. It helped me heal; no one is ever alone on the Enterprise.

Despite his passing, I could go on and on about how great those days were and how happy Trek made me… But more to the point, getting into Star Trek was an explosive experience. Imagination, possibility, hope, courage…It helped me further explore these things within, and today I consider myself a playful explorer with a love for the outdoors, astronomy, art, music…things that provoke curiosity, wonder, and a sense of adventure.

While daily life can be a drag at times, it is important break away from the mundane. Share in your adventures with those you love and it tends to make life that much more awesome, for those experiences are timeless and transcend everyone, no matter who you are or where you come from. And challenges: They can be overcome together.

Twenty years later, the kid in me squee’s that I have my own starship. There are no limits. So boldly go.

Fun event! I was pulling my hair out on some of them and then *BOOM!* spaced out and I figured a few out. I think I burned out my Transwarp Drive going all over the galaxy. B)

Thanks for putting it all together and the videos were excellent!

Awesome video, Voleron! For the life of me, I can't remember where that auditorium is at in the Starbase. I must've been drunk at the ceremony. And, boy, does my voice sound weird. Someone get me a lozenge!

Fantastic speech though... very inspiring. You must put me in touch with your speech writer ;)

Ok so, Companions of Stonewall will continue to operate as the PVE, non-factional side of the Stonewall house in ESO. We will focus on new player PVE guidance and more casual gaming while running with the factional PVP Stonewall Guilds. All are encouraged to join any or all of the Guilds.

Well, I'm a poor student :D This means I won't spend real money on in-game items.. Right now ;) But I hope someone who does spend money will profit from what you've written!

Oh my, thanks for all the replies!
Well, I did the Sphere of Influence but I don't have the Warp core. I might have sold it, I can't remember..
I hope having a fast ship is of high value not only for the Tour the Galaxy mission ;)

You can re-do the mission and select the warp core. There are multiple rewards so you may have just selected something else the first time. :)

Well i enjoyed the event even if it made me near apoplectic at times! xD

i never thought the voth core was the one answer, nor have i ever seen the back on the V'Rex...i'm not inclined to get that close :P

and the nimbus bar wall display...i honestly never paid attention to it lol, i'm going to have to remember locations better just in case we have to defend against Tal Shiar insurgency again :3

Also that video was epic...though i must have missed my invite to the award ceremony, or would having a merc hanging around spoil the mood? :P

Re: Server Transfer

I'm very conflicted about this, because i'm spending a fair amount of time in WvW.

WvW is certainly depressing these days, and i can't wait until we're not matched against HoD anymore, but against smaller servers, which we're closer to in terms of population. All i hope is that we're not stuck at the bottom of Silver League for the next 9 weeks...

I don't feel i have much loyalties to CD as a server, but i would stick with SWVG if i chose to transfer. I'm nowhere close to having the necessary funds anyway (and i'm somewhat reluctant to spend real money for that).

Re: Crystal Desert status

Thanks for your answer El. And to David, i'm not sure whether your comment is supposed to be about me or not, but i can assure you that i'm repping SWVG 99% of the time (the other 1% being Teq or Wurm raids, which i'm repping TTS for).

I understand what you mean when you're saying that server transfers are somewhat cowardish, but honestly, there's just no point in going to the Mists these days, when we just can't do anything against HoD numbers. My reason for transferring would be to be actually able to play the game, without being rolled over again and again every time i'm in a group trying to take a tower or even a camp. I suppose it's only temporary, and that things will balance out once we go a bit further down the ladder (i hope we're not stuck in Silver League for the next 9 weeks, btw), but still, for the time being, it's quite frustrating.

Edit: two weeks later, we're doing pretty good against servers on par with us.The leaderboards show that HoD is vastly overpowered compared to CD and may even be on par with Gold League servers. No wonder we were trampled upon. I'm gonna stick with CD some more. ;)

I don't do WvW very much, and would not really want to transfer servers. However, I will stick with the guild and what is ultimately decided.

Re: Server Transfer

March 31 2014
Please note the prices for transfers currently are:

Tournament pricing (March 28-May 30)
Region - World Rating - Transfer Cost (gems)
NA - 13-15, and 22-24 - 1000
EU - 7-9, 16-18, and 25-27 - 1000
NA - 4-6, 10-12, and 19-21 - 1400
EU - 4-6, 13-15, and 22-24 - 1400
NA - 1-3, 7-9, and 16-18 - 2400
EU - 1-3, 10-12, 19-21 - 2400

As a part of these changes, we will also implement new restrictions to WvW access after transferring worlds. These restrictions will go into effect on March 28. After that date, anyone who transfers worlds will be able to play only in the Edge of the Mists WvW map for the duration of their current and subsequent matchup. If you transfer worlds on a Tuesday, you won’t be able to enter the Borderlands or Eternal Battleground maps until the Friday of the following week. You will still be able to play in Edge of the Mists and progress the tournament meta achievement, but you will not be able to contribute to the score of your WvW matchup.

Re: Server Transfer

March 31 2014
Just to clear up any misconceptions:

Stonewall Vanguard has no home world requirement. Members may choose any home world they please. In fact, I've noticed members on European servers and GW2 doesn't support cross-region play beyond in-game mail, chat, trading post, etc.

Edit: Stonewall Vanguard has one guild representation requirement: Members must represent the guild while participating in guild events.

GW2 does not link guilds to a home world. Guild membership is shared across worlds. However, guild progression is not shared: guild currency (influence, merits) and guild upgrades (bonuses, bank vaults, mission unlocks).

Home-world transfers are purchased on a per-account basis with in-game gems. Costs vary depending on time of year and the population of the destination server. As an example, the regular, non-tournament pricing is as follows, using the conversion rates as of this writing:
Medium - 500 gems = 31.8 gold / $6.25 / €6.25 / £5.3125
High - 1000 gems = 63.6 gold / $12.50 / €12.50 / £10.625
Very High - 1800 gems = 114.48 gold / $22.50 / €22.50 / £19.125
